When searching for the perfect house there are several things I look for. One is innate character, after all, isn't that so many are drawn to older houses anyway? This house was quite sad when I first saw it, but really just felt to me like it needed the lights turned on again (in a figurative way of course). It was the cutest little farmhouse, an original 1920's homestead. The exterior was just so darn cute, almost just as it was! It just needed a fresh coat of paint (and some landscaping too) to bring it alive again.
My main thing is to keep the historical part of the home, to save as much as possible to avoid the landfills, and to add modern amenities so that it is comfortable and efficient in today's world.
The left is before, see what I mean? Cute huh? We added some railing to the porch, a snazzy and modern cedar fence, gave it a fresh look with paint and landscaping.
The kitchen before, we kept all the original cabinets! Just fixed some of the issues, cut out an area for a tiny dishwasher, and added the cabinets and shelves on the other side for the range. Oh, and moved the ugly water heater out of the kitchen, because that was just weird.
Can you see 'it' in the original space? Because I can! And this one got me called crazy, more than once. We took out the floor furnace and patched wood back in, filled in the old cracks (and there was a ton!) with drywall, rewired the house without tearing out the walls (hallelujah! Tearing out the walls causes a huge domino effect, usually have to tear out all the trim, sometimes the doors, and sometimes the plaster is what is holding the entire house up!)
Of course this is one of our buy, design, sell projects we handle all in house, but we can handle projects like this for you as well. Any or all of it.
The journey is the destination is the perfect way to describe me. I love all things beautiful, am taken aback by nature, inspired by rivers, trees, and structures that surround us. I'll write about what inspires me, from our travels around the world to my obsessions with everything home.
